About the Art21 Magazine

As part of Art21’s array of programming designed to illuminate the creative process, the Art21 Magazine provides a space for insightful writing on contemporary art and artists. Here, you’ll find our quarterly issues, resources on the intersection of art and education, as well as news on Art21 films and programs. The Art21 Magazine, which was previously the Art21 Blog, is available exclusively online.

Art21 Magazine issues are published four times per year and devoted to a single theme. Led by Art21’s executive director and chief curator Tina Kukielski, each issue’s articles and essays are carefully selected to connect to both the theme at hand and to broader conversations happening in the art world and the world at large. The Art21 Educator-in-Residence also contributes two articles to each quarterly issue.

HISTORY AND READERSHIP

  • Launched in 2007, the Art21 Blog underwent its third and most significant redesign in 2013 and was renamed the Art21 Magazine. With this change, the site shifted from a guest blogging program to bimonthly thematic issues.
  • Art21 Magazine readers are primarily based in the United States, but the publication also has significant audiences in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia, and Germany.
  • To date, a group of regular contributors and a rotating cast of guest writers have published over 4,000 blog posts and articles.

EDUCATOR-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

From 2014-2017, Art21 and CUE Art Foundation facilitated a joint fellowship for emerging writers. This collaborative program provided writers with the opportunity to develop new writing for publication in print and online. The program developed out of the Art21 Blog’s guest blogging program (2009-2013)—one of the first online—which invited an artist, critic, curator, educator, or other arts professional to contribute content over two consecutive weeks.

In the spring of 2017, the Writer-in-Residence role transitioned to become an Educator-in-Residence. Each issue now serves as a platform for one of the dedicated teachers from the Art21 Educators community to share their expertise on the intersection of art and education, in relation to the issue’s theme.
