Art21 and CUE Art Foundation—neighboring nonprofits in the Chelsea/Flatiron district of Manhattan—have joined forces on their long-running programs for emerging writers, combining CUE’s Young Art Critic Mentoring Program and the Art21 Magazine Writer-in-Residence initiative. This new collaborative program provides four writers annually with the opportunity to develop new writing for publication in print and online. Selected writers will work with an established art critic appointed by the International Association of Art Critics USA Mentoring Committee.
Over the course of three months, each writer composes a long-form critical essay on one of CUE’s exhibiting artists, which will be published by CUE in a printed exhibition catalogue and also published here in the Art21 Magazine. Writers will also develop one or two short texts specifically for an issue of the magazine. This joint program aims to provide meaningful and constructive publication opportunities for emerging writers, and contribute to the field of art criticism by increasing professional development and networking opportunities in the early stages of a writer’s career.
The joint fellowship begins in the fall of 2014. Writers are awarded a $500 unrestricted stipend. For the 2014/2015 season, the Fellowship is open to writers from Baltimore, MD; the New York metropolitan area; and Santa Fe/Albuquerque, NM.
To apply for the program, submit three arts-related writing samples and a CV in PDF form to fellowship [at] cueartfoundation [dot] org with the subject line “YAC Fellowship Application.”
Additional opportunities: CUE and Art21 accept applications for their ongoing, individual programs year-round. For the 2014/15 season, CUE seeks writers from the Detroit and New York metropolitan areas. Art21 Magazine accepts pitches from writers worldwide.
