Cao Fei finds inspiration in film noir, Mary Reid Kelley continues to explore the Minotaur, Do-Ho Suh to sign books in Austin, and more in this week’s roundup of ART21-featured artists.
- Cao Fei’s stop-motion film La Town is on view at Lombard Freid Gallery (New York, NY) through October 25. The film “exemplifies the artist’s playful-yet-political practice,” says the press release, “converging fantasy and reality into a film noir-inspired vision of the contemporary China and the world at large.” Watch the film trailer here.
- Mary Reid Kelley’s video Swinburne’s Pasiphae (2014) is on view at Pilar Corrias (London, UK) through October 4. A follow-up to the artist’s video Priapus Agonistes (2013), this new video is part of an ongoing trilogy that explores the mythological Minotaur’s “tragic” family tree.
- Ai Weiwei has work in the group show Genius Loci–Spirit of Place at Lisson Gallery (London, UK). Organized to coincide with the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, curated by Rem Koolhaas, the show addresses the “complex spheres of the public realm and the built environment.” Closes November 23.
- Marina Abramović’s work is also on view at Lisson Gallery. Her exhibition White Space presents a range of historic works, including two sound pieces, previously unseen video documentation of seminal performances and a number of newly discovered photographs, all dating from 1971–1975. Closes November 1.
- Pierre Huyghe’s inaugural exhibition with Hauser & Wirth (London, UK) is up through November 1. In. Border. Deep features all new work, including a series of aquariums. The starting point of the exhibition is the film De-extinction (2014), in which Huyghe uses macro- and micro-scopic cameras to record insects encased in amber.
- Also at Hauser & Wirth London is WS SC, an exhibition focusing on Paul McCarthy’s paintings from two multidisciplinary projects: White Snow and Stagecoach. In conjunction with the show, a room of Hauser & Wirth’s Savile Row gallery is devoted to a suite of new drawings by the artist. Closes November 1.
- New works by Diana Al-Hadid are on view at Secession (Vienna, Austria). The Fates comprises large sculptures and two inset panels for which the artist took inspiration from classical sculpture and early northern Renaissance painting. Closes November 2.
- William Wegman will lecture at Alfred University (Alfred, NY) on September 18 at 6pm. The artist will talk about his work, including the photographs of canines that inspired him to write several children’s books.
- Do-Ho Suh will discuss his work with curator and professor Rochelle Seiner at The Contemporary Austin (Austin, TX) on September 20 at 2pm. Steiner is lead author of Do Ho Suh Drawings (2014), the first English-language monograph of the artist’s work, focused on his drawings. Suh and Steiner will sign books after the talk.
