New sculptural works in San Francisco and New York City
New and recent work by Janine Antoni is on view at Anthony Meier Fine Arts (San Francisco, CA) through April 3. Turn includes a series of ceramic vessels alongside a new architectural installation of the artist’s 2013 work, Crowned.
Antoni’s recent work will be on view as part of a solo exhibition of at Luhring Augustine (New York, NY). From the Vow Made, which includes a collection of sculptural works and a video collaboration, is on view from March 21—April 25.
Works included in both shows were featured in two episodes from the ART21 Exclusive series: Janine Antoni: Milagros and Janine Antoni: Collaborating with Stephen Petronio.
Artist’s talk kicks off spring 2015 artist-in-residence
An-My Lê will speak at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver, Canada) on March 16, inaugurating the artist’s appointment as the Spring 2015 Audain Distinguished Artist in Residence. The residency program brings internationally renowned contemporary artists to Vancouver, creates curriculum specific to each individual visiting artist, and supports the creation of new works.
Show is part theatrical event, part installation and part ritual
Abigail DeVille will once again collaborate with stage director Charlotte Brathwaite, as well as composer/pianist Courtney Bryan, on a new project. Prophetika: An Oratorio, which is inspired by Harriet Tubman, Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, and the sci-fi film 2001: Space Odyssey, will take place at La MaMa (New York, NY) from March 20 through April 5. Making art from discarded objects
Inner Cycles, an exhibition of work by Gabriel Orozco, is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo through May 10. The exhibition includes a mix of the artist’s well-known work along with recent work.
Photography looks at how history pervades the present
A retrospective of work by Hiroshi Sugimoto is currently on view at Fondazione Fotografia (Modena, Italy). Stop Time features a significant selection of photographic works, from the horizons depicted by Seascapes to recent ‘out-of-focus’ works devoted to Modernist architecture. On view through June 7.
16mm film series spans the globe
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will present Thread Routes—Chapter I, II, and III, the first 16mm film series produced by Kimsooja. This project features six chapters shot in different parts of the world, including a “triangular installation” with three chapters filmed in Peru, Europe, and India, respectively. On view from March 12 through July 12.
Twenty-year anniversary features twenty shows
20 Years/20 Shows: SPRING, the first of a three-part exhibition series revisiting the history of SITE Santa Fe (Santa Fe, NM), will include exhibitions featuring work by Mary Reid Kelley and Jessica Stockholder. Reid Kelley will present two recent films and associated objects based on 19th-century literary works, while Stockholder will present a selection of works that “showcase a more intimate side of her sculptural practice.” The exhibitions will be on view from March 14 through May 31.
Artist joins Art Basel in Hong Kong
Cao Fei will participate in two events at Art Basel in Hong Kong, including Conversations, a platform for discussions that allows audiences access to an insider’s point of view, and Encounters, an exhibition dedicated to large-scale sculptural installations that transcend the traditional art fair booth. The talk will take place on March 15; the exhibition will be on view through March 17.
Artists are announced for the Venice Biennale
The Venice Biennale has announced a list of artists for the core exhibition, which will include Bruce Nauman and Sarah Sze. All the World’s Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor, will be on view from May 22 through November 22.
Also during the Venice Biennale: Kara Walker will develop staging, set, and costume designs for a production of the Vincenzo Bellini opera, Norma, at Teatro La Fenice. Performances of the Biennale-commissioned production will run from May 20 through June 6.
