This weekend the world saw the largest national and international protest in decades, with an estimated 3.3 million Americans participating in the Women’s March in all 50 states across the country. Not to mention the millions protesting internationally, on all seven continents across the globe. Kara Walker and Catherine Opie are just two of the Art21 roster artists we know of who were in attendance.
Events & exhibitions:
NYC
- This Thursday, January 26, a new exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem is opening. Entitled Excerpt, the exhibition features the work of Kara Walker and Glenn Ligon alongside that of 13 other artists. (On view through July 2, 2017.)
- This is the last week to see Kerry James Marshall’s retrospective Mastry at the Met Breuer. The museum is hosting a day-long symposium on Saturday that is already sold out, and Mastry closes Sunday, January 29.
- This is also the last week Elizabeth Murray, a solo exhibition that includes one painting and more than 40 drawings by the artist. Curated by Carroll Dunham and Dan Nadel, the exhibition is on view at the Lower East Side gallery Canada and also closes Sunday. [Read a review in The New York Times.]
Saratoga Springs, New York
- A new exhibition, Janine Antoni/Stephen Petronio: Entangle, opens on Saturday at Skidmore College. Presenting three works that combine action, video, and installation, the exhibition begins with Rope Dance, on view through March 19.
Chicago
- Thursday, January 26 | 6-7pm—LaToya Ruby Frazier is giving a lecture at the Art Institute Chicago in which she will discuss her work—personal, incisive explorations of issues surrounding race, representation, and social justice.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Natural State, a new exhibition by Ai Weiwei is opening at Meijer Gardens on Friday, January 27. The artist’s first show in the upper Midwest, it is also his first installation at a botanical garden or sculpture park.
Georgia
- Savannah—Nick Cave’s Soundsuits are being installed as part of a new exhibition at the Jepson Center for the Arts opening on Friday. Nick Cave will be on view through April 23, 2017.
- Austin—O N E E V E R Y O N E, a new exhibition by Ann Hamilton is also opening on Friday at the University of Texas at Austin’s Visual Arts Center. The artist will be giving a talk ahead of the opening on Thursday at the LBJ Auditorium from 7-8:30pm.
Denmark
- Thomas Hirschhorn’s new series of Pixel-Collages opened last Friday at Kunsthal Aarhus, where they’ll remain on view through March 19.
The Netherlands
- A solo exhibition by Richard Tuttle also opened on Friday at De Hallen Haarlem. Richard Tuttle is on view through May 7.
Berlin
- This coming Friday, January 27, a new exhibition of work by Cindy Sherman is opening at Sprüth Magers. The public reception for the show is being held Thursday night and the photographs will be on view through April 8.
