This morning, the New York Times announced Good Fences Make Good Neighbors, a series of Ai Weiwei installations coming to various sites around New York City in October 2017. More than one-hundred of Ai Weiwei’s works will be installed in public spaces as part of the Public Art Fund project, which attempts to highlight the city’s historical role as a gateway to the U.S. for millions of immigrants.
“I was an immigrant in New York in the 1980s for ten years and the issue with the migration crisis has been a longtime focus of my practice,” says the artist. “What’s important to remember is that while barriers have been used to divide us, as humans we are all the same. Some are more privileged than others, but with that privilege comes a responsibility to do more.”

Los Angeles
- The Mistake Room is opening Diana Thater’s newly commissioned project A Runaway World, this Saturday, April 1. The exhibition is comprised of two works the artist produced in Kenya in 2016 and 2017, and will remain on view through June 3.
- Power: Work By African American Women From The Nineteenth Century To Now is opening Wednesday at Sprüth Magers. Featuring work by LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ellen Gallagher, Simone Leigh, Julie Mehretu, Lorraine O’Grady, Mickalene Thomas, Kara Walker, and Carrie Mae Weems among others, Power is on view through June 10.
Milan
- Sincerely, Tony, a new exhibition by New York Close Up artist Jamian Juliano-Villani is opening Thursday at Massimo de Carlo Milan (on view through April 29).
Hong Kong
- An installation of Do Ho Suh’s Passage/s opened last week at Lehmann Maupin, where it will remain on view through May 13.
- An exhibition of new work by Theaster Gates entitled Tarry Skies and Psalms for Now is on view at White Cube through May 20.
