Last Wednesday Chicago’s Navy Pier announced that it’s commissioning artist Nick Cave and architect Jeanne Gang to create Here Hear Chicago this fall, a version of the artist’s collaborative community performance showcased in Art in the Twenty-First Century Season 8. Performers selected by Cave will interact with objects designed by Gang in a series of live productions that mix art, design and performance.

New York City
- A new group exhibition at Andrew Kreps Gallery entitled I Plan to Stay a Believer presents work that uses the body to explore social contexts. Featuring work by Tala Madani, Catherine Opie, and Nancy Spero among others, the exhibition is on view through August 19.
- Metro Pictures’ latest group exhibition, A New Ballardian Vision, features work by Trevor Paglen, Jim Shaw, and Cindy Sherman, and is on view through August 4.
Bridgehampton, NY
- Mary Heilmann just opened a solo exhibition at the Dan Flavin Art Institute. Comprised of paintings and ceramics that mark significant milestones in the artist’s career, Painting Pictures is on view through May 27, 2018. [Read reviews in Artsy and WWD.]
East Hampton, NY
- Rashid Johnson curated a new exhibition at Rental Gallery entitled Color People, featuring work by Mary Heilmann among others. Johnson writes, “The artists included are a wide range of painters whose works perform differently but with a shared radicality in their employment and understanding of color.” On view through July 25. Rochester, NY
- The University of Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery just opened a single-channel video installation by Charles Atlas. Entitled Here she is… v1, the piece features iconic drag performer Lady Bunny and is on view through September 17.
Washington D.C.
- The National Museum of Women in the Arts’ new group exhibition Revival presents the work of contemporary women sculptors and photo-based artists. Featuring work by Louise Bourgeois, Lalla Essaydi, Anna Gaskell, Maria Marshall, Patricia Piccinini, Alison Saar and Beverly Semmes, the exhibition is on view through September 10.
Ketchum, ID
- Vija Celmins is one of six artists featured in Sun Valley Center’s new exhibition Night Watch. Her segment from Season 2 of Art in the Twenty-First Century is screening within the exhibition, on view through August 26.
Santa Fe, NM
- The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts is opening a new exhibition on Friday, July 7 entitled Connective Tissue: New Approaches to Fiber in Contemporary Native Art. Featuring Native American artists who integrate various forms of fiber art, the exhibition includes Brian Jungen’s 2016 installation 27th Street. [Read a review in the Albuquerque Journal.]
Los Angeles
- Thursday, July 6, 8pm—Cindy Sherman’s first foray into directing, a 1997 horror film titled Office Killer, is screening at the Echo Park Film Center. Reflecting on when technology first began to enter the workplace, the film will be introduced by Dahlia Schweitzer, author of the book Cindy Sherman’s Office Killer: Another Kind of Monster.
London
- White Cube’s latest exhibition explores Surrealism’s continued influence in the work of more than fifty women artists including Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, and Laurie Simmons. Dreamers Awake is on view through September 17.
Cologne
- Galerie Christian Lethert just opened a solo exhibition of work by Richard Tuttle, curated in collaboration with the artist and installed in harmony with the gallery’s architecture. Titled Books, Multiples, Prints, Writings and New Projects, the exhibition is on view through July 22.
Hamburg
- you you you, a solo exhibition by Liz Magor, opened Saturday at Kunstverein where it will be on view through September 3.
Seoul
- Krzysztof Wodiczko’s first major retrospective in Asia opens Wednesday, July 5 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Entitled Instruments, Monuments, Projections, the exhibition will be on view through October 9. [Read a review in Yonhap News.]
