Last week TIME launched a new multimedia project titled Firsts—a series celebrating contemporary women breaking barriers. Both Cindy Sherman and Maya Lin were included as “The Artist” and “The Sculptor” respectively, among the likes of Madeleine Albright and Oprah Winfrey. Also this week:
- Chris Ware illustrated today’s cover of The New Yorker, painting a scene that conveys the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and selflessness of neighbors helping neighbors.
- The Louvre Abu Dhabi is officially opening in November, with site-specific outdoor works created by Jenny Holzer.
- Maya Lin has been commissioned to create an outdoor installation at Princeton’s new Lewis Center for the Arts.
- And finally in gallery news, New York Close Up artist Mariah Robertson is now represented by Van Doren Waxter gallery, and Season 8’s Tala Madani is represented by 303 Gallery.
Events & exhibitions
New York City
- An exhibition of new work by Season 8 artist Barbara Kasten opened last Friday at Bortolami. Entitled Parti Pris for the chief organizing principle of an architectural project, the show features brand new work and will be on view through October 21.
- This Wednesday Meriem Bennani is opening a new solo exhibition at The Kitchen. Featuring a new video that offers an intimate view into the lives of two Moroccan women, Siham and Hafida, the show will be on view through October 21.
- Also opening Wednesday is a new group exhibition at Mnuchin Gallery. Minimalism & Beyond features work by Robert Ryman, Bruce Nauman, Jeff Koons, Mark Bradford, and Rashid Johnson among others, and will be on view through October 18.
- Omer Fast’s 2016 film August is opening Saturday, September 16 at James Cohan. A 3D digital film inspired by the life and work of German photographer August Sander, August will be on view through October 29.
- Also opening Saturday is a solo exhibition by Diana Al-Hadid at Marianne Boesky. Entitled Falcon’s Fortress, the show will be on view through October 21.
- Saturday, September 16, 10am-7pm—This Saturday the New Museum is hosting a day-long series of artist talks, performances, and workshops in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. IdeasCity New York is a free, public event and will include talks by Mel Chin (10:40am), Tania Bruguera (11:20am), and Trevor Paglen (11:40am).
Buffalo, NY
- Do Ho Suh’s work is included in a new group show opening tonight at Albright Knox Art Gallery. Out of Sight! Art of the Senses is on view through February 4, 2018.
Hartford, CT
- Wednesday, September 13, 6pm—Glenn Ligon will be speaking with Northwestern University’s Dean and Professor of Art History Huey Copeland at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, for a discussion on how contemporary African American artists address race.
Philadelphia
- A new exhibition of work by Martin Puryear opened last Friday at The Print Center. Martin Puryear: Prints, 1962-2016 is on view through November 18.
- Thursday, September 14, 6:30pm—Cai Guo-Qiang’s public art project Fireflies is holding its opening celebration on Thursday night. The piece features hundreds of glowing handcrafted Chinese lanterns attached to 27 customized pedicabs that will travel along Benjamin Franklin Parkway Thursdays through Sundays for 4 hours each night until October 8.
Columbus, OH
- A retrospective of Cindy Sherman’s work, Imitation of Life, is opening Saturday at the Wexner Center for the Arts where it will be on view through the end of the year.
Chicago
- Wednesday, September 13, 8-10pm—Season 8 artist Nick Cave is collaborating with architect Jeanne Gang to present a new performance, Up Right Chicago, at Navy Pier’s Aon Grand Ballroom as part of the opening of EXPO CHICAGO. Cave’s Hear Hear Chicago is also being performed on Saturday and Sunday.
Minneapolis
- Thursday, September 14, 8:30pm—The Walker Art Center is hosting a free screening of Omer Fast’s 2015 film Remainder.
San Diego
- UC Davis’ Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art is opening a new group exhibition on Sunday entitled Dimensions of Black. With more than 30 artworks from the 1960s to today, the exhibition features work by Martin Puryear, Carrie Mae Weems and Jack Whitten among others.
Los Angeles
- A new exhibition, From Mexico City to LA: A Visual History of Graphic Art, is opening Saturday at Mixografia, as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Featuring the gallery’s first print collaboration with Abraham Cruzvillegas, Ichárhuta, along with work by John Baldessari, the exhibition examines the dialogue between the “traditions of Mexican graphic art and the practices of Los Angeles-based artists.”
Wiltshire, UK
- This is the last week to see Andrea Zittel’s solo exhibition The Flat Field Works at New Art Centre. The collection of recent sculpture, painting and textile works closes this Sunday, September 17.
Paris
- Cindy Sherman, Glenn Ligon, Abraham Cruzvillegas, and Gabriel Orozco are among the 26 artists that have donated works to a special exhibition and auction at Palais de Tokyo—the funds from which will go to NGOs that assist refugees arriving in France. Entitled, We Dream Under the Same Sky, the exhibition will be on view September 16-21 and the benefit auction will be held Wednesday, September 27.
Tel Aviv
- Louise Bourgeois’ first museum exhibition in Israel opened Friday at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Entitled Twosome, the exhibition will be on view through January 20, 2018.
Istanbul
- Tomorrow the Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum is opening Ai Weiwei’s first exhibition in Turkey. Ai Weiwei on Porcelain includes over 100 works spanning more than four decades of the artist’s practice, and will be on view through January 28, 2018.
- On the occasion of the Istanbul Biennial (September 16 – November 12), Borusan Contemporary is presenting an exhibition of work by Diana Thater entitled A Runaway World. Opening Saturday and on view through February 18, 2018, the show is comprised of five video-based installations: three newly commissioned and two earlier works.
Johannesburg
- Thursday, September 14, 9:30am—William Kentridge is kicking off this year’s Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival with a keynote address titled “Enough and More Than Enough.”
