As part of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Monument Lab project, Mel Chin just unveiled a new public art installation in front of City Hall. Entitled Two Me, the work features two empty monument plinths with ramps leading up to them. Inviting members of the public to become monuments themselves, the plinths feature the singular word “ME.”
Also this week, El Anatsui was among the five artists announced as the winners of this year’s Praemium Imperiale Awards, a global arts prize presented by the Japan Art Association since 1989.

New York City
- The work of both Lynda Benglis and Bruce Nauman are featured in the new Met Breuer exhibition Delirious: Art at the Limits of Reason, on view through January 14. [Read a review in The New York Times.]
- Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 1-3 pm—Creative Time and the New York Public Library are hosting an event entitled “How To Make Living Sustainable,” featuring Mel Chin in conversation with attorney and environmental justice leader Elizabeth Yeampierre. The talk will be moderated by Marcel Van Ooyen, the president GrowNYC, a local environmental nonprofit. Get tickets.
- This Sunday, a new solo exhibition of work by Louise Bourgeois is opening at MoMA. Entitled An Unfolding Portrait, the exhibition brings together 220 prints and books, and celebrates the completion of the online catalogue raisonné, Louise Bourgeois: The Complete Prints & Books. On view through January 28, 2018.
Wellesley, MA
- Tomorrow Eddie Martinez is opening his first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. at Wellesley College’s Davis Museum. Ants at a Picknic, on view through December 17, includes seven new large-scale paintings and a selection of painted bronze sculptures and large drawings.
Boston
- The Museum of Fine Arts is opening a solo exhibition of Joan Jonas’ work on Sunday. Joan Jonas: Ice Drawing will be on view through July 1, 2018.
Waterville, Maine
- Tuesday, September 19 at 6 pm—As part of the first artist residency at Colby College’s Lunder Institute for American Art, Theaster Gates will be the institute’s inaugural speaker, giving a talk on his work combining art and social progress.
Pittsburgh
- A two-part exhibition on the work of LaToya Ruby Frazier is opening this week at the Silver Eye Center. The Notion of Family opens Thursday at Silver Eye and will be on view through November 18; and On the Making of Steel Genesis: Sandra Gould Ford opens Friday at the August Wilson Center and will be on view through the end of the year.
Minneapolis
- Saturday, September 23 at 2 pm—The Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting an artist talk with Omer Fast.
- And on Sunday, MIA is opening a solo exhibition of Fast’s work, New Pictures: Omer Fast, Appendix, which includes two of the artist’s films, August (2016) and Looking Pretty for God (2008), and will be on view through February 18, 2018.
- Sunday, September 24, at 3 pm—As part of his new solo exhibition at MIA, Omer Fast will also be participating in an artist talk and screening of his 2016 film Continuity at the Walker Art Center.
Los Angeles
- This is the last week to see Gemini G.E.L.’s exhibition of new work by Ann Hamilton. Featuring a series of screenprints alongside three etchings, the show closes tomorrow, September 19.
London
- Tomorrow the Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art is opening an exhibition of work by Martin Puryear. The show will be on view through December 6 and includes 30 works—both sculptures and works on paper—that span 40 years of the artist’s practice.
- On Friday Lisson Gallery is opening an exhibition of work by Allora & Calzadilla entitled Foreign in a Domestic Sense. Comprised of sculpture, performance, photo and video works, the show closes November 11.
Lyon, France
- On Wednesday, the 14th Biennale de Lyon exhibition, Floating Worlds, opens. Featuring the work of more than 50 artists including Laurie Anderson, Alexander Calder, Ernesto Neto, Damián Ortega, and Diana Thater, the show will be open through January 7, 2018.
Silkeborg, Denmark
- Museum Jorn is opening a Cindy Sherman retrospective this Saturday. Featuring 65 photos, the show closes December 10.
Munich, Germany
- Last week Haus der Kunst opened Centrifuge, a new site-specific installation by Sarah Sze in the museum’s Middle Hall. Centrifuge is on view through August 12, 2018.
- Also at Haus der Kunst is a new exhibition of video art entitled Again and Again. Featuring the work of Matthew Barney and Cindy Sherman among others, the show is on view through April 8, 2018.
Berlin
- On Saturday Sprüth Magers Berlin opened a new installation by Barbara Kruger. On view through December 22, Forever includes a new work that fills an entire gallery wall with a single quote from Virginia Woolf’s essay “A Room of One’s Own.” [Read a review in T Magazine.]
Seoul
- A new solo exhibition by Paul McCarthy opened last week at Kukje Gallery. Entitled Paul McCarthy: Cut Up and Silicone, Female Idol, WS, the show features new sculptures and drawings, and will be on view through October 29.
Moscow
- The 7th Moscow Biennale opens tomorrow and continues through January 18, 2018. The Biennale’s “Main Project,” an exhibition entitled Clouds ⇄ Forest, features work by 52 artists including Matthew Barney, Pierre Huyghe, and Olafur Eliasson.
