Last week the Guggenheim announced that Cao Fei is one of five artists selected to create works for the third and final phase of the museum’s Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative. The new works will debut as part of the multi-year research, curatorial, and collection-building initiative on May 4, 2018.
Also this week, the American Prairie Reserve announced that Maya Lin has been named the recipient of the second annual Ken Burns American Heritage Prize, which recognizes those who have advanced our collective understanding of America’s heritage and the “indomitable American spirit of our people.”

New York City
- Wednesday, December 13 through Saturday, December 16—Charles Atlas’ 3D dance film Tesseract—a collaboration with choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener—is being performed five times this week at the BAM Harvey Theatre.
- Thursday, December 14 at 6:30pm—The artists behind Carried on Both Sides, Caroline Woolard, Helen Lee, Alexander Rosenberg, and Lika Volkova, are participating in a panel discussion at the Lesley Heller Workspace. The collaborative, interdisciplinary work was the subject of our most recent New York Close Up film on Woolard, and the event is being held in conjunction with the work’s exhibition at Lesley Heller through December 16.
- Sunday, December 17 from 12pm-10pm—Carrie Mae Weems is concluding her year-long residency at the Park Avenue Armory with a day-long convening on the history of violence. Art21-featured artists Tania Bruguera, Theaster Gates, and Jason Moran are among those participating in a series of readings, performances, conversations, and other artistic responses curated by Weems, collectively titled “The Shape of Things.”
- This is the last week to see Talking Pictures: Camera-Phone Conversations between Artists at the Met, in which artists were partnered up to engage in a visual dialogue using only their smartphones. The exhibition closes this Sunday and features photo interactions between William Wegman and Tony Oursler, and Cao Fei and Wu Zhang among others.

- On Friday the Fabric Workshop and Museum is opening its 40th anniversary exhibition, Process and Practice: 40 Years of Experimentation. On view through March 25, 2018, the exhibition will feature the contents of over 80 archival Artist Boxes alongside finished works by artists Cai Guo-Qiang, Ann Hamilton, Yinka Shonibare MBE (RA), Sarah Sze, Richard Tuttle, and Carrie Mae Weems among others.
Washington D.C.
- Thursday, December 14 from 6:30-7:30pm—New Yorker journalist Evan Osnos is moderating a discussion between artists Tania Bruguera, Hank Willis Thomas, and Eric Gottesman at the Hirshhorn as the museum’s second installment of “In Conversation: Awareness, Action and Dissent.”
Los Angeles
- Saturday is the closing day of Lynda Benglis’ exhibition at Blum & Poe. This is the artist’s first solo show on the West Coast since her 2011 retrospective at MOCA, and the LA Times writes that the works in the show “explode with extraterrestrial wonder.”
