Dana Helwick

Contributor
Dana Joy Helwick is a visual and performance artist, educator, coordinator, improviser, and a firm believer in “all things fun, all the time.” Originally from the Bay Area in California, she has been living and teaching in New York City since 2011. Helwick has been a teaching artist in the Bronx, an art and technology teacher at a special-education K–7 school in Manhattan, a grade 3–5 art teacher at a large charter school in Queens, and, most recently, a teacher of improv at Improvolution in the West Village. Her goal as an educator and as an artist is to play with purpose: to engage with experiences that encourage us to solve problems, establish relationships, and practice thinking critically as well as creatively. For eight summers, Helwick also assisted in coordinating and facilitating the Art21 Educators program, and she continues to be an active member of its alumni community.
