Art21 News Roundup: Minerva Cuevas Bridges the Border

The redesigned Art21.org has a whole section dedicated to News, so instead of posting about every film release here on the magazine, we’re bringing you monthly roundups of all Art21 news.

In this inaugural post, you can find information about an upcoming event we’re hosting at the Kitchen, and two new Art21 films that premiered in March. For up-to-date Art21 news, check out the new News section of Art21.org, sign up for our newsletter, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Jamian Juliano-Villani’s Field Work

Premiered March 17, as part of the Art21 digital series New York Close Up

Artist Jamian Juliano-Villani scours Manhattan in search of inspiration for the unpredictable imagery that fills her paintings, first prowling the Strand Bookstore and later touring Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square. “I think anyone that is an artist is constantly feeling the guilt of [the pretensions of art-making],” says the artist, “so that’s why I like these other weird elements of life.”

Minerva Cuevas: Bridging Borders

Premiered March 24, as part of the Art21 digital series Exclusive

Minerva Cuevas considers the implications of President Trump’s proposed border wall, and reflects on her 2010 work Crossing of the Rio Bravo, in which the artist painted a bridge across a riverbed that divides Mexico and the United States. “Books and projects can be important, but they won’t be a solution,” says Cuevas. “The problems or the crisis in the world is generated by everybody. So it has to be also a massive reaction.”
