High Estimates Got You Down?

Take a break from the solemnity and doom ‘n gloom of the art world by checking out the work of one Eric Doeringer.  The Brooklyn-based artist has a solo show up currently at the F.U.E.L. Collection in Philadelphia. Doeringer is most infamous for his series of Bootlegs, little cheap knock-offs of his slightly more famous contemporaries, such as Louise Bourgeois, Inka Essenhigh, Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Barry McGee, Julian Opie, Richard Prince, and on and on.  Critic Jerry Saltz has even admitted to owning a few Bootlegs himself.

No one is safe from the humor of the artist provocateur’s claws, including Matthew Barney. The artist created a fake fan site of the Season 1 artist called Cremaster Fanatic, where one can get a clear synopsis of the entire Cremaster series as well as buy memorabilia, share Barney-inspired work, and check Ebay for available Matthew Barney items.

Eric Doeringer: Bootlegs, Homages, and Recreations is on view until December 28.
