In this week’s roundup, Richard Serra’s elemental drawings, Laurie Anderson’s Brazilian retrospective, Maya Lin is commissioned, a couple of artist talks, and much more.
- Richard Serra has recent drawings executed between 2007 and 2010, now on view at the Gagosian Gallery in Geneva. Serra’s method uses black paintsticks heated to a fluid state to create elemental forms through direction action on the paper and the accretion of medium. These drawings are explorations and integral to the overall concerns of his sculptural practice. The exhibition closes on May 14.
- Laurie Anderson‘s retrospective exhibition opened at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) and it is titled I in U (Eu em Tu). The show features installations, photographs, drawings, videos, music and documentations of performances, creations produced since the 1970s to the present day. The exhibition runs through June 26.

- Lari Pittman will give a talk at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on April 11, 5:30-7:30pm. This event is a celebration of the publication of Lari Pittman, the first monograph on the artist. Curator Paul Schimmel will talk to the artist about love, violence, and desire in his “big, visually gripping and psychologically strange paintings.”
- Louise Bourgeois‘s work is in Double Sexus: Hans Bellmer and Louise Bourgeois, organized in Berlin and making its U.S. debut at the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University. The exhibition gives a fascinating and sometimes-disturbing view of the parallels between Bourgeois and Bellmer, a German expatriate. The show is on view until July 31.
- Judy Pfaff will give a talk on May 9 at 4pm at the Wexner Center. Pfaff will be a guest of the Graduate Student Art Club.
- Carrie Mae Weems is among several artists whose works are on view in Safety in Numbers? Images of African American Identity and Community. The exhibition features works that explore the ways in which isolation, community, and the search for identity affected African Americans during the 20th century. This Portland Art Museum exhibition closes April 17.
- Maya Lin has been selected by Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research as the architect and designer of its new campus to be built on Massachusetts Avenue just north of MIT, at the former Analog Devices site, between Albany Street and Windsor Street.
- Shahzia Sikander has a show entitled Shahzia Sikander: The exploding company man and other abstractions at the San Francisco Art Institute’s Walter and McBean Galleries, that will feature paintings, drawings, and animations by the artist. The show will run April 23–June 25.
- Trenton Doyle Hancock is part of a group show at ZieherSmith (NYC). The exhibition is entitled Gumption and features vigorous paintings and works on paper.
- Collier Schorr is partnering with Stussy Deluxe to create a series of images to highlight its Spring 2011 collection. The artist’s work incorporates domestic flower and landscape arrangements. Fruit and flowers take a prominent place in the foreground of Schorr’s images.
