Today, ART21 is very excited to announce a partnership with ArtPrize 2014, the Grand Rapids, Michigan art competition now entering its sixth year. The partnership introduces a number of collaborative programs set to take place during the 19-day event; but first, let’s flashback to 2009.
Back in August 2009, ArtPrize exhibitions director Kevin Buist introduced the very first ArtPrize right here on the ART21 Magazine (then known as the Art21 Blog) as one of the first posts in the “Art 2.1” column; so, it seems fitting that, five years later, we publish another article announcing this new partnership.
For the 2014 event, ART21 founder and executive director Susan Sollins will lead the ArtPrize Grand Jury—assembled by ART21—to award the event’s Juried Grand Prize winner. The Grand Jury includes two artists to be featured in the forthcoming Season 7 of ART21’s PBS broadcast series, Art in the Twenty-First Century: Leonardo Drew and Katharina Grosse. (Reveal!)
The world preview of Art in the Twenty-First Century, Season 7 will take place during ArtPrize on October 2, with a U.S. broadcast premiere to follow on PBS later in the fall. Additional screenings of other ART21 films will also take place throughout the event.
Also taking place during ArtPrize 2014 are two weekend workshops for education, presented by staff from the ART21 Michael C. Sandler Educators Program, in cooperation with Grand Rapids Art Museum and local PBS affiliate WGVU Public Media.
Finally, ART21 will present the first ART21 Young Filmmakers Award, eligible for receipt by local high school student filmmakers who make a compelling film about contemporary art in the context of ArtPrize.
More information about the ART21/ArtPrize partnership can be found in the ART21 press release and on the ArtPrize Blog, and additional information will be revealed throughout the summer. In the meantime, presented below is a slideshow of work displayed at ArtPrize over the last five years.
