Once again the ART21 staff presents their favorite art findings this month. A few of us have been traveling so our picks are a little more global than usual!

“Mierle Laderman Ukeles at the Queens Museum. Genius slam dunk.”

Eve Moros Ortega, Executive Producer
On view through February 19, 2017

“This week Carrie Mae Weems released a short video titled The Power of Your Vote. By pairing footage from her archive with excerpts from Obama’s recent address to the Congressional Black Caucus, Weems highlights what’s at stake this November.”

Ian Forster, Producer

“Four west coast shows of ecstatic eccentrics:

Berkeley Eye at BAM/PFA, Berkeley — a wondrous collection exhibition traversing thousands of years of art from biblical visionary paintings to Bay Area surrealism to sublime Indian miniatures to post-Minimalist masterworks. On view through December 11.

Kari Cholnoky at Et al. Gallery, Minnesota Street Project, San Francisco — garishly furry and funny assemblages that crawl out from under the bed and into your nightmares.

The Last Waves by Julia Feyrer and Tamara Henderson at Belkin Art Gallery, University of British Columbia, Vancouver — two laugh out loud films of sculptural sets misbehaving and of shooting bottles filled with feathers and pigment in the snow. Closes December 4.

Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver — one could spend all day, every day, for a year studying the ethnographic collection of masks, costumes, and puppets and never exhaust the surprises. Even better is the ethical treatment of culturally sensitive materials.”

Wesley Miller, Curator

“Europe Close Up: A couple of New York Close Up project artists have shows in European galleries this fall . . .

One of ART21’s fav painters Jamian Juliano-Villani is showing new work—including some first-time-for-her sculptural stuff—at Studio Voltaire in London. Opens September 30 and runs thru December 11. Expect Olympic swimmer aliens playing the recorder. You know, the usual.

Anti-gravity fan and all around great guy Alejandro Almanza Pereda is continuing his extraordinary series of photographs, videos, and sculptures of underwater still lifes at Chert gallery in Berlin. Runs thru October 22.”

Nick Ravich, Director of Production

“I found Sara VanDerBeek’s show at Metro Pictures stunningly beautiful.”

Tina Kukielski, Executive Director
On view through October 29

“Fall weather is perfect for a stroll around Storm King Art Center. Or, rent a bike and whizz by all those di Suveros!”

Jonathan Munar, Director of Digital Media and Strategy
