There were awards galore this week for Art21 roster artists! Chicago Magazine named Kerry James Marshall Chicagoan of the Year, Charles Atlas was announced as one of this year’s United States Artists Fellows, and the artists for the 2017 Whitney Biennial include Tommy Hartung, An-My Lê, and Season 8’s Tala Madani. Also this week:
- Marina Abramović shared a dinner date she once had with the late Leonard Cohen in Time.
- Last week it was announced that Josiah McElheny will be installing three sculptures in Madison Square Park this summer.
- Artists Eleanor Antin, Rodney McMillian, Catherine Opie, Mark Bradford, Diana Thater, Edgar Arceneaux, John Baldessari, and many more gathered at LACMA this weekend to re-create a famous 1968 photograph of what was then a fledgling artists’ community.
- On Saturday in Gary, Indiana, Theaster Gates celebrated the opening of the “social kitchen” ArtHouse, an arts and culinary incubator and gallery. “Art has the ability to create a place where great things can happen, and great things are happening here,” Gates said.
- And finally James Turrell and Schmidt Hammer Lassen collaborated to design an extension to the ARoS Art Museum in Denmark. Preliminary designs were just revealed and include an underground gallery and a semi-underground art installation called “the dome.”

- BELLEVUE—This is the last week to catch Kara Walker: Emancipating the Past at the Bellevue Arts Museum. The show ends its five month run this Sunday, November 27.
