Kerry James Marshall, Laurie Anderson, and Theaster Gates all won awards this week.
This week was all awards for Art21 artists. Kerry James Marshall was announced as the winner of this year’s CAA Artist Award for Distinguished Body of Work, and Laurie Anderson received the Award of Merit for Achievement in Performing Arts from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP). Plus, Season 8 artist Theaster Gates was announced as the 2017 winner of the Center for Architecture and Design’s Edmund N. Bacon Award, which honors one individual who has advocated for excellence in urban development, planning, thought, and design.

- Tania Bruguera was detained and interrogated in Cuba on January 12 while traveling to deliver supplied to the victims of Hurricane Matthew.
- Mark Dion released the second edition of The High Line: A Field Guide and Handbook, documenting the flora and fauna found along the elevated park.

- Tuesday, January 17 & Thursday, January 19—The New York Jewish Film Festival is hosting the U.S. premiere of William Kentridge: Triumphs and Laments, Giovanni Troilo’s documentary on the artist’s colossal frieze in Rome.

Oakland, CA
- This Wednesday, January 18 a solo exhibition by Diana Al-Hadid is opening at Mills College Art Museum. Featuring recent large-scale sculptures, wall constructions, and drawings, the exhibition closes March 12.
Myanmar, Yangon
- A new exhibition by Wolfgang Laib opened last Friday at Goethe-Institut Myanmar. Entitled Where the Water and the Land End, the exhibition runs through February 4.
London
- This is the last week to see Jeff Koons’ exhibition at Almine Rech Gallery. Jeff Koons closes this Saturday, January 21.
- Room, a new exhibition featuring the work of 15 women artists including Louise Bourgeois and Andrea Zittel, opened on Friday at Sadie Coles. The exhibition will be on view through February 18. [Read a review in T Magazine.]
