This Week in Art 5.22-5.28: Mark Bradford Shines in Venice

Stan Douglas. Win, Place or Show, 1998–99. 2-channel video projection with 4-channel soundtrack
Collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery Acquisition Fund and purchased with the nancial support of Gelmont Foundation, VAG 99.52.3 a-n. Featured in the new exhibition Pictures from Here.

Of course, having your work featured in the Venice Biennale is bound to garner press attention, but Mark Bradford’s exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion has resulted in serious praise, including being called today’s Jackson Pollock. Bradford has been credited for expanding painting to the realm of social practice, like Pollock brought the “theatrical performance of ‘action'” to the medium. Hyperallergic writes that the show offers a “glimmer of hope,” Culture Type uncovers the inspiration behind the exhibition, and the Baltimore Sun says the show “roughs up the American Dream.”
