Of course, having your work featured in the Venice Biennale is bound to garner press attention, but Mark Bradford’s exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion has resulted in serious praise, including being called today’s Jackson Pollock. Bradford has been credited for expanding painting to the realm of social practice, like Pollock brought the “theatrical performance of ‘action'” to the medium. Hyperallergic writes that the show offers a “glimmer of hope,” Culture Type uncovers the inspiration behind the exhibition, and the Baltimore Sun says the show “roughs up the American Dream.”

New York City
- This is the last week to see Marela Zacarías’ solo exhibition at the Viacom building (1515 Broadway at 44th Street). Echoing Forms closes on May 29.
North Adams, MA
- On Sunday, May 28, four solo exhibitions are opening at MASS MoCA: a multi-decade retrospective of the work of James Turrell; a large-scale outdoor projection by Jenny Holzer; a series of marble sculptures by Louise Bourgeois; and a “multi-functional constellation of galleries and installations” by Laurie Anderson.
Providence, RI
- This is the last week to see Pierre Huyghe’s 2014 film Untitled (Human Mask) at Brown University. The gallery featuring the film closes Saturday, May 28. [Read a review in the Boston Globe.]
St. Louis
- Abigail DeVille’s site-specific installation St. Louis Blues has its own room within Urban Planning: Art and the City 1967–2017 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. The group exhibition is on view through August 13. [Learn more about the piece in the Riverfront Times.]
Los Angeles
- A new art museum is opening this Thursday, May 25 and will feature a series of works by a number of Art21 artists. The Marciano Art Foundation’s collection includes pieces by Paul McCarthy, El Anatsui, Matthew Barney, Theaster Gates, Raymond Pettibon, Rashid Johnson, Glenn Ligon, and more. - This is the last week to see James Turrell’s installation Breathing Light at LACMA. The final day of the five-year installation is May 29, and there are “no immediate plans to show the work in the near future,” so don’t miss it.
Vancouver
- A new exhibition on contemporary Canadian photography entitled Pictures From Here opened last week at Vancouver Art Gallery. Featuring work by Season 8 artists Jeff Wall and Stan Douglas, among others, the exhibition is on view through September 4.
Winterthur, Switzerland
- A new solo exhibition featuring work by Trevor Paglen opens Saturday at Kunsthalle Winterthur. Deep State will remain on view through July 9.
