Last week Richard Serra joined Andy Warhol, John Baldessari, Cindy Sherman and Laurie Anderson as a designer of the official poster for the New York Film Festival. The 55th NYFF is coming to the city this September. Also this week:
- London launches this year’s Sculpture in the City outdoor exhibition tomorrow, which includes Paul McCarthy’s 2010 piece Apple Tree Boy Apple Tree Girl. The 16 selected artworks will remain on view in London’s Square Mile throughout the summer.
- Eleven artists including Kerry James Marshall, John Baldessari and Julie Mehretu contributed artworks that “defined beauty” for Vogue’s 125th anniversary. The selected artworks are printed on limited-edition bags and shirts that will raise money for two HIV/AIDS charities, one in the U.S. and the other in Africa.
- On Thursday Jeff Koons was named a Harman-Eisner Artist in Residence at the Aspen Institute. He will be participating in the Aspen Ideas Festival happening this week.
- German media producer Deutsche Welle released a new documentary following Ai Weiwei for a year as he prepared his latest series of works on the refugee crisis. Titled Ai Weiwei Drifting, the 42-minute film can be watched online.

- This is the last week to see Vija Celmins’ solo show at Drawing Room Gallery. The exhibition closes today, June 26.
Baltimore
- On Wednesday, June 28 an exhibition pairing Kara Walker’s installation Salvation with Hank Willis Thomas’ photographic piece And I Can’t Run, opens at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Black Box: Kara Walker & Hank Willis Thomas is on view through March 18, 2018.
Washington D.C.
- Also on Wednesday, the East Coast debut of Ai Weiwei’s installation Trace is opening at the Hirshhorn. Comprised of 176 portraits made of LEGO® bricks, the installation depicts “activists, prisoners of conscience, and advocates of free speech.” Ai Weiwei: Trace at Hirshhorn will be on view through January 1, 2018.
Alexandria, VA
- The Torpedo Factory Art Center is hosting a residency for Mel Chin’s Fundred Dollar Bill Project through Friday, June 30. Visitors are invited to learn about the project, share their thoughts, and create their own Fundred, a “currency of imagination.”
Milwaukee
- Rashid Johnson’s exhibition Hail We Now Sing Joy opened Friday at the Milwaukee Art Museum where it will remain on view through September 17. [Read a review in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.]
West Palm Beach, Florida
- Tuesday, June 27, 1pm—The Art in the Twenty-First Century segment on artist Louise Bourgeois is screening at the Norton Museum of Art, and will be followed by a conversation on the artist’s sculptures.
Los Angeles
- A new exhibition of work by Paul McCarthy opens Saturday, July 1 at Hauser & Wirth. Paul McCarthy. WS Spinoffs, Wood Statues, Brown Rothkos will be on view through September 17.
