Last week NPR Music named Laurie Anderson’s debut album one of the 150 greatest albums made by women. Titled Big Science and released in 1982, the album came in at number 80 on the list, alongside the likes of The Runaways, Patti Smith, and Lauryn Hill. Also this week:
- Kara Walker’s monumental work The Jubilant Martyrs of Obsolescence and Ruin was acquired by the High Museum in Atlanta, where it will be on view in 2018.
- Trevor Paglen’s work was the subject of a recent VICE News Tonight documentary on HBO. Exploring Paglen’s new work The Atlas of Invisible Images, the documentary uncovers the artist’s fascination with images made by and for neural networks.
- And finally, Ai Weiwei has been selected to receive this year’s Adrienne Clarkson Prize for Global Citizenship.

New York City
- This is the last week to see Gladstone Gallery’s group exhibition Lyric on a Battlefield, featuring work by Liz Magor. The show closes this Friday, August 4.
- It’s also the last week to see Lucid Dreams and Distant Visions: South Asian Art in the Diaspora at the Asia Society. Featuring work by Shahzia Sikander, the exhibition closes this Sunday, August 6.
Southampton, NY
- A new exhibition at the New York Academy of Art, presents an exploration of contemporary portraiture and features work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alex Katz, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, and Mickalene Thomas among others. - A solo exhibition on the work of Alfredo Jaar is closing Sunday at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Detroit
- The group exhibition 99 Cents or Less is also closing this Sunday, August 6 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Responding to Detroit’s economic crisis and its 2013 bankruptcy, the exhibition features work by Edgar Arceneaux, John Baldessari, Alfredo Jaar, Rashid Johnson, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Josiah McElheny, Arlene Shechet, and Laurie Simmons among others. - Roni Horn concluded 2017’s Artists Select series at the Clyfford Still Museum, curating a new exhibition of Still’s paintings from the mid-1940s to the end of his career. On view through September 24. [Read a review in The Denver Post.]

- Yellowstone Art Museum’s new exhibition Modernist Intersections features work by Andy Warhol, Henry Moore, and Kiki Smith, and is on view through October 15.
Portland
- A series of prints by John Baldessari just went on view at Elizabeth Leach Gallery. The solo exhibition is titled Madame Cézanne’s Hairdo’s and is on view through September 2.
Seattle
- Jenny Holzer’s The Survival Series will be on view as part of the Seattle Art Fair, being held this coming weekend, August 3-6. The plaques will be integrated within the architecture of Seattle’s Pioneer Square.
Los Angeles
- Over the Rainbow, a new exhibition at Praz-Delavallade gallery, celebrates confrontational LGBTQ art and features work by John Giorno, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Catherine Opie among others. On view through August 26.
