On Wednesday the biennial performance art festival Performa is starting here in New York, and will bring a series of installations, performances, and events to the city through November 19. Participating Art21 roster artists include William Kentridge, Barbara Kruger, and a collaborative performance by Julie Mehretu and Jason Moran.
Also this week:
- Trenton Doyle Hancock is designing a series of masks just in time for Halloween tomorrow. “I’m always thinking of layers,” says the artist about the series, “and who gets access to see behind them.”
- And a painting by Jordan Casteel (featured in our first film on the artist) is on the cover of the latest edition of Frieze Magazine.
Events & exhibitions
New York City
- This is the last week to see David Brooks’ installation on Governor’s Island. Entitled Rock, Mosquito and Hummingbird, the installation—comprised of rock core extractions and bronze markers around the Island—closes tomorrow.
- Barbara Kruger’s Performa installation opens on Thursday at Coleman Skatepark, where it will remain on view through November 19. Entitled Untitled (Skate), the project is just one of Kruger’s many contributions to this year’s Performa, which also includes the artist’s first live performances, a billboard installation, and a wrapped school bus.
- A solo exhibition by Florian Maier-Aichen is opening Thursday at 303 Gallery, where it will remain on view through December 22.
- Also opening Thursday is a new exhibition of work by Elizabeth Murray entitled Painting in the ’80s, comprised of sixteen paintings created by the artist in the 1980s. The works will be on view at Pace Gallery through January 13, 2018.
- Also opening on Thursday at Pace is an exhibition pairing the work of Agnes Martin and Richard Tuttle. Entitled Crossing Lines, the show will be on view through January 13, 2018.
- The collaborative project documented in our latest New York Close Up film on Caroline Woolard is going on view this Saturday at Lesley Heller Workspace. Carried on Both Sides will be on view through December 16.
- A solo exhibition by Richard Serra is also opening Saturday at David Zwiner. Comprised of two major new works in forged weatherproof steel, the exhibition will also feature recent drawings by the artist. On view through December 18.
- Sunday, November 5 & Monday, November 6 at 7pm—William Kentridge’s second Performa commission, Ursonate, based on Kurt Schwitters’s seminal 1932 sound poem, is being staged at Harlem Parish.
Carlisle, PA
- Wednesday, November 1 from 5-6:30pm—Dickinson College is hosting a screening of short animated films by William Kentridge at the school’s Weiss Center for the Arts.
Richmond, VA
- Saturday, November 4 from 10:15-11am—Shahzia Sikander will be speaking at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Cheek Theater as part of the 7th Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art.
Houston
- Wednesday, November 1 from 6:30-8pm—Trenton Doyle Hancock will be giving an artist talk at Art League Houston in conjunction with his 2017 Texas Artist of the Year exhibition, Texas: 1997-2017.
Fayetteville, AR
- Friday, November 3 from 7-8pm—Lynda Benglis is giving a lecture at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art as part of the 2017 Distinguished Speaker Series.
Los Angeles
- Tuesday, October 31, from 6-8pm—Pepón Osorio is giving a lecture on his art practice at USC Roski School of Art & Design.
- On Saturday Hauser & Wirth is opening an exhibition of new work by Ellen Gallagher entitled Accidental Records, which will be on view through January 28, 2018.
- A solo exhibition by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle is also opening on Saturday at Christopher Grimes Gallery. Entitled The Garden of Delights, the show will be on view through December 29.
- On Thursday, Gagosian’s Beverly Hills gallery is opening an exhibition of new watercolor paintings by Walton Ford. His first show with the gallery, Calafia will be open through December 16.
Rotterdam, Netherlands
- A new site-specific installation by Abraham Cruzvillegas, commissioned as the twelfth edition of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen’s Sensory Spaces series, is now on view through January 14, 2018.
Athens
- Sally Mann’s first exhibition in Athens is opening Thursday at Gagosian. Remembered Light: Cy Twombly in Lexington will be on view through January 20, 2018.
