Invited by the Guggenheim Museum to collectively formulate a scenario for an exhibition, artists Pierre Huyghe (Season 4), Angela Bulloch, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, and Rirkrit Tiravanija articulate the nature of their own practices in theanyspacewhatever. This group exhibition, which opens to the public today and runs through January 7, intends to capture the spirit of art that emerged during the early 1990s.
To compliment the exhibition, Huyghe has developed a participatory event called “OPENING,” which begins tonight at 6:30 pm. The artist will transform the Guggenheim’s rotunda to “disrupt and disorient the exhibition experience” by making the gallery space disappear as it’s temporarily submerged in darkness. Only the audience will be visible and their gaze will light the exhibition. The one-hour event will also take place at 4:30 pm on Nov 17 and Dec 8.
Huyghe’s book of iron-on transfers that illustrate the Guggenheim’s exterior and interior, incorporating images of the spaces in which the artworks appear as “a speculative device–a representation of a possible reality,” will be on display in the exhibition and available for sale in the museum’s retail stores.
