This week, the first major museum survey for Season 2 artist Raymond Pettibon is coming to the New Museum. Opening on Wednesday, Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work will be the largest presentation of the artist’s work to date, including more than 700 drawings that chronicle the artist’s five-decade career. Also this week:
- Three Art21 artists—Ai Weiwei, Tania Bruguera, and Mel Chin—were announced as participants in Philadelphia’s upcoming Monument Lab in the fall. Twenty-two artists will attempt to answer the question “What makes a monument in the 21st century?” through installations in five squares and five parks across the city.
- Tala Madani’s video installation Chit Chat, is now on view at MoMA as part of the museum’s protest exhibition against Trump’s travel ban, featuring work by artists from Muslim nations.

New York City
- New Canvas, an exhibition of work by New York Close Up artist Daniel Gordon, is on view at James Fuentes Gallery through February 26. [See works from the show in The Creators Project.]
- Wednesday, February 8 | 6:30pm—Mary Reid Kelley is participating in a panel talk at The New School alongside fellow artists Meriem Bennani, Patrick Kelley, and Hannah Whitaker, all of whom are featured in Public Art Fund’s city-wide exhibition, Commercial Break.
- The Intersectional Self, an exhibition on gender and feminist politics in the age of trans-identity, is opening on Thursday at The 8th Floor. Featuring work by Janine Antoni, Abigail DeVille, Catherine Opie, Adrian Piper, Cindy Sherman, and Martha Wilson among others, the show “explores how notions of femininity (and alternately, masculinity) have shifted in the context of newly defined gender identities.”
- This Friday, February 10 Andrea Rosen Gallery is opening a new exhibition by Elliott Hundley entitled Dust Over Everything. On view through March 11.
Amherst, MA
- Kara Walker’s exhibition Emancipating the Past is now on view at the University of Massachusetts’ Museum of Contemporary Art through April 30.
Madison, WI
- A new solo exhibition by Do Ho Suh is opening this Saturday, February 11 at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, where it will remain on view through May 14.
Los Angeles
- Edgar Arceneaux’s Library of Black Lies, a sculptural installation featured in Season 8, is on view at The Main Museum of Los Angeles Art through March 26.
Berlin
- Alfredo Jaar’s mixed media installation Shadows, featuring the silhouettes of two women who have just learned of their father’s murder, is coming to Galerie Thomas Schulte this Saturday. The installation will be on view through April 15.
London
- Terrains of the Body, a new group exhibition featuring Marina Abramović alongside 16 other artists is on view at Whitechapel Gallery through April 16. Selected from the collection at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in D.C., the exhibition showcases how artists “embrace the female body as a vital medium for storytelling, expressing identity and reflecting individual and collective experience.”
- Barbara Kasten’s first solo exhibition in the U.K. opened last week at Thomas Dane Gallery. Entitled Intervals, the show includes both historic and recent works from the artist’s 40 year career.
