This week it was all about public installations for Art21 artists. Jenny Holzer’s text piece for the New York City AIDS memorial officially opened to the public. Located near the former St. Vincent’s hospital where a special ward opened for people with HIV in 1984, the piece is comprised of excerpts from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.”
Also this week, MTA released photographs of four immersive installations inside the new Second Avenue Subway system. The new trains will start running on January 1, and artists Chuck Close, Vik Muniz, Jean Shin, and Season 6’s Sarah Sze were each responsible for the art in four subsequent subway stations.

- Louise Bourgeois’ son, Jean-Louis Goldwater Bourgeois, is gifting his landmarked West Village townhouse to a non-profit organization run by the Lenape tribe.
- Laurie Anderson was announced as one of the performers (alongside Iggy Pop and Patti Smith) coming to the Tibet House benefit in March.
- Finally, Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York City has announced that it now represents Vancouver-based sculptor and Season 8 artist Liz Magor.
Events & exhibitions
Miami
- tête-à-tête, an exhibition addressing the social, political and personal mythologies of the black body, is on view at David Castillo Gallery through January 31. Featuring photographs by Carrie Mae Weems alongside work by Wangechi Mutu, Clifford Owens, Hank Willis Thomas, and others, the exhibition was curated by Mickalene Thomas. San Marino, CA
- A new exhibition by Lari Pittman entitled Mood Books is on view at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Garden through February 20. Not in California? Not to worry, the exhibition is also online. [Read a review in The Architect’s Newspaper.]
Philadelphia
- This is the final week to see Ann Hamilton’s habitus at the Fabric Workshop and Museum. The exhibition ends its four month run on January 8.
St. Gallen, Switzerland
- A new exhibition by Mark Dion just opened last week at Kunstmuseum St. Gallen. Titled The Wondrous Museum of Nature, the exhibition is open through September 2017.
